An expat in Israel: 5 things you need to know!

Intercultural competence: being an expat in IsraelBeing an expat in Israel is a challenge! I outlined the cultural considerations in my guest post for the blog “What about my pencilskirt?” Constance Grunewald-Petschke’s project fascinates me: it specifically addresses women moving abroad as expats, whether posted by their company or accompanying their husband as a “trailing spouse”. Women, leadership and culture? Of course I immediately wanted to support her as an expert on Israel . Whether in Israel, England, India or anywhere else, moving abroad is confusing. Being an expat means a new life in a new country. Everything must be reconsidered and organised; you find new friends, build contacts and want the experience to advance your career. Yet after the initial excitement, your surroundings feel increasingly foreign. You hardly dare admit it: “Me, culture shock? Surely not!” The best remedy for expats in Israel: Prepare! After all, we research visas and work permits in advance too. Looking at culture should be just as natural: where are the pitfalls and cultural differences? “What about my pencil skirt” and my article on Israel address precisely this question. (Trouble with the link? The article is available here as a PDF.) Enjoy reading! Want more to read about Israel?
