The faces of war – A unique project

It’s a unique project and a piece of current history: The German photographer Jens Umbach documented the war in Afghanistan by portraying German soldiers. Black and white pictures were taken of soldiers before their deployment, of members of the troops while in Afghanistan, of the soldiers’ families, of veterans upon their return and of the widows of those who did not come back.

He found a fascinating way to picture hopes and fears without words, to show on a very humane level what war does to actual people and their lives. A true testimony to the secret power of body language.

The artist could secure an exhibition in Kassel, Germany. He looked on kickstarter for funding and donations to make these fascinating photographies into a book.
